Look who’s all ears 🥰 This clip was taken just a few minutes before I had to hand Kaju over to good hands for the winter. He’ll spend the cold months with others of his kind and hopefully hibernate peacefully before he can be released next year. ✨ Kaju came to me as a teenager after being caught by a cat. His wings had holes and one finger was broken. It healed very slowly, but in the end it was strong enough for him to fly again and the risk of re-injury was finally low. Since I’m no longer al

4.37 grams…when he should be 6 g at the absolute minimum. 😱 Please cross your fingers for little Theo. He just arrived a few hours ago and I really hope he’ll pull through. His sweet finders spotted him in their kitchen and acted fast (Thank you so much for bringing him in!). Maybe he’d been there unnoticed for a while or he was desperately trying to reach warmth because he was already so malnourished. Theo is almost starved to death and was so dehydrated that I’ve rarely seen a bat still alive

Look who has his own little hut now 🦇😃 Theo has developed incredibly well. All test results look great, so he was able to leave quarantine. He’s steadily gaining weight - and he’s such a sweet, smart little patient who immediately figured out how to feed on his own. Now I’m hoping Monty will be fully okay soon too, so he can join Theo. 😵💫 Sorry for the wobbly movie. I hope it didn't make you dizzy. I am not that good at movies with motion. 😅 #batrehabilitation #wildliferehabilitation #bats

Severely injured Patrick still manages to enjoy his dinner.🥹 He’s had terrible luck. He was hibernating in a room where wood was stored for work. When people were moving the boards, they must have accidentally knocked him down without realizing he was there. Sadly, he didn’t make a sound, so they didn’t notice and placed a board on top of him.😱 That was when he squealed. They acted quickly, called for help, and even drove a long way to get him the care he needed. Thank you so much for that kin

🦇 After a bath, it’s grooming time! 🛁 This little common pipistrelle is carefully licking and cleaning its wing membranes - because hygiene is essential for bats. Their fur and wings must stay in perfect condition to keep them healthy and able to fly. Bats spend a lot of time grooming every day: licking their fur and wing membranes, using their toes to comb through the fur and stretching their wings. Keeping everything neat and shiny. ✨ If they can’t groom themselves properly, they may become

Our amazing veterinarian Dr. Adrienne Breaux released two of our rehabilitated bats last week. Her dedicated team of veterinary professionals and family were there to see these beautiful creatures fly free once again. These second chances are made possible by compassionate individuals who take time out of their day to help animals in need. They’re also made possible thanks to the incredible dedication of our veterinarians and their hardworking teams. Thank you to everyone involved for making thi

Daubentons bats hunt for insects right above the water surface. I am pretty sure Fredda did know that this is not water but she was keen to show me how she would do it. 😂 Unfortunately Fredda had some necrotic tissue at her ear that has to heal until she can be released. I hope it will heal fast. Female bats get pregnant in care these days and I want her to get her baby in nature. #insecthunter #fishing #daubentonsbat #wasserfledermaus #batrehab #batsareawesome | Maid of Bats - Bat Rehabilitati

We missed Floof Friday, so here is a sleepy Zeus (zeusy poo), a hoary bat currently in care. He was hand raised as an older pup by staff last year after being found grounded following a severe thunderstorm. He sustained head trauma and bruising to his one wing. His flight ability will be assessed in the coming weeks to determine release. #pabatrescue #savepabats #lasiuruscinereus #hoarybat | Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitation

Gaia, my new education bat, is having a little difficulty adjusting to her new surroundings and has not eaten much in the last two days. I talked to her original rehabber, my friend Toni, and she suggested I put Gaia back in the small cube she traveled in to Cincinnati to see if that might help with stress, so I tried that tonight (pic in comments). She was dehydrated from not eating, so I gave her some fluids, too. Hopefully being in a smaller, cozier enclosure will help get her over this hump!

Please welcome Dracula 🦇 He decided to book himself a few days at the all-inclusive bat spa - with help of a really nice human 🧖♀️✨ Dracula is a young bat who accidentally found his way into a flat - maybe thinking it would be a nice roost. This happens quite often at this time of year, when inexperienced teenagers roam the night sky. Usually, opening the window wide and switching off the lights is enough for them to return outside - but not always. When I saw a picture of him, I thought he l

Now that we have your attention with this lip smacking hoary bat floof, we would like people to be vigilant of bats during this time of the year. Winter is very challenging for both migratory and hibernating species. White nose syndrome is devastating and will cause major issues during the months of January through April in Pennsylvania. Please be on the lookout for bats that are found grounded or roosting low. please do not leave bats in the cold exposed to the elements, resulting in a slow dea

Just a lil guy with a big appetite 🦇✨ Our Bat Squad is currently caring for over 20 bats! Sudden temperature fluctuations can wake bats from hibernation, which is why they sometimes end up indoors during winter. If you find a bat inside, contact Salthaven or your nearest licensed wildlife rehabilitator before intervening. Bats cannot be released outdoors in cold weather, even if they appear alert, as low temperatures can be fatal. #bats #wildliferehab #ontariowildlife #wildlife #skypuppies | Sa

The fastest bat alive. 💨 Seriously, I have never seen a bat run this fast. There is NO time lapse at this video. I wanted to do a flight test and see if she would be able to start off the ground or even spread her wings. Morning grooming session with two of our hoary twins ❤️ Hoary bats groom so much because it’s essential for flight performance, hygiene, health, temperature control, and possibly communication or comfort. If you talk to me before coffee… this is what you get. 😅 Maybe this little guy just had a great night and I was a bit too early with the morning routine. No worries - this tiny pipistrelle doesn’t drink coffee. And he’s not shaking because he’s scared. He was resting in torpor (basically energy-saving mode): his body temperature and metabolism dropped, and now he’s slowly warming back up for breakfast. 🥹 The “just rolled out of bed” look is Zippel’s special talent. 🤭 He’s also healing a wound

Momma red and her pups are doing great. She’s settling into the routine of us gently removing her pups one at a time, feeding them and placing them back with mom to get cuddled and groomed. Such a wonderful momma bat. It took the family some time to understand that we were not going to harm them. Instead we give provide a safe, quiet space for them to rest and enjoy some snacks in between. We are happy to have this ability to care for these amazing, delicate creatures. This one is a little out of my wheelhouse, but I'm always up for making my wheelhouse bigger! This Big Brown bat was found under a drain pipe in Fairfield yesterday and brought to me this afternoon. Its (don't know gender yet) right wing is badly torn, but I have been advised by bat specialists Anita Buck and Toni Turk that the wing will heal and the bat will be releasable. I'll keep you all updated as I learn more. I'm so grateful to have guidance from fellow rehabbers, and also to be doing som

The mission of our rescue/rehab/sanctuary could not be anymore defined as this video. Swimming pool girl arrived lifeless, barely clinging to life. And when we say barely, she couldn’t lift her head and lay helpless. She weighs 8.5g (normal weight 13-15g) her chest cavity sunken in, along with her spine, shoulder blades and pelvis protruding. Critical fluids, and medications were first on board, with subcutaneous fluids in small increments over several hours. We left her rest in a heating pad an

Our educator and volunteer Jeff released this small little floof two nights ago back home in Bucks County. Little brown bat populations in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, have experienced a dramatic decline due to White-Nose Syndrome (WNS), a fatal fungal disease that has devastated bat colonies across the northeastern United States. In the early 2010s, a mine in Upper Bucks County, once home to over 10,000 hibernating bats, was nearly wiped out by WNS. By 2013, only 23 bats remained, with half show
