At the moment of shooting this dance scene at the beach, Anthony Quinn (Alexis Zorba) had a broken foot so he couldn’t perform the original dance which involved jumping around. This dance called ‘syrtaki' was created especially for this movie by Giorgos Provias adapting many elements from traditional Greek dances.
