A jury of 12 plus three alternates were sworn in Tuesday in the criminal misconduct trial of a former Georgia prosecutor charged with interfering in the police investigation of the 2020 killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

The one-time Georgia prosecutor accused of using her office to impede the investigation into Ahmaud Arbery’s killers is set to stand trial more than four years after the Black 26-year-old’s death fueled nationwide protests over racial injustice.

At the time Ahmaud Arbery was killed, Jackie Johnson had served for a decade as district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit. Greg McMichael worked in her office as an investigator before retiring in 2019.

Attorneys clashed before a trial jury Tuesday over whether a former prosecutor abused her power to try to protect the men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery in the streets of a quiet Georgia neighborhood nearly five years ago.

A judge in Brunswick, Georgia, seated the jury Tuesday for the trial of former District Attorney Jackie Johnson.
