As millions of Americans hunker down for the winter storm, 19 states and Washington, D.C., have declared states of emergency.

A winter storm continues to impact Washington, D.C., and its surrounding area as snowfall transitions to sleet, creating hazardous conditions that are expected to last through Sunday night and continue this week.

On Sunday at 11:57 p.m. the National Weather Service issued an updated winter storm warning in effect until Monday at noon for Mercer, Venango, Lawrence, Butler, Beaver, Allegheny, Washington and Greene counties.

Over 200 million people across 37 states were under winter alerts on Sunday morning. Some 1 million were without power.

The snowballs were expected to start flying at 9 a.m. on Sunday on the North lawn of the Washington Monument near the intersection of 15th Street and Constitution Ave. But organizers decided to cancel the event due to sleet conditions.

About half the population of the United States is in the path of heavy snow and crippling ice, the National Weather Service said.

A mix of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain will hit the region this weekend.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is already preparing for the winter storm this weekend. In a post on the social media platform X, the agency shared its decision to cancel maintenance work scheduled for Saturday and outlined its weather protocols.

President Trump, who plans to remain in Washington over the weekend, is being briefed regularly about the storm, the White House said.
