Rosneft, Russia's biggest oil producer, on Sunday slammed European Union sanctions on India's Nayara Energy refinery as unjustified and illegal, saying the restrictions directly threatened India's energy security.

The European Union and Britain are ramping up pressure on Russia over its war on Ukraine. The EU has introduced new sanctions to deprive Moscow of energy revenue through a lower oil price cap and a ban on transactions with Nord Stream gas pipelines.

The 27-nation E.U. also approved a plan to lower the price cap on Russian crude oil and ban transactions with 22 more Russian banks.

Sanctions from the European Union and United States have devastated Russia’s coal sector, causing billions in losses, collapsing exports, shuttering mines, and threatening economic stability.

Europe will not back down in its support for Ukraine. The EU will keep raising the pressure until Russia ends its war,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a statement.

The U.K. has sanctioned Russian military intelligence officers and units linked to a deadly 2022 theater bombing in Ukraine.

Rosneft accused the EU of overreach, claiming the sanctions violate international law and infringe on the sovereignty of third countries like India.
