Capital One Financial Corp. has bought Discover Financial Services, bringing together two of the biggest credit card firms so they can better compete with other Wall Street behemoths. The takeover was valued at $35 billion when it was announced in February 2024.

Discover has said accounts aren't linked to the new corporate owner, so Capital One branches and customer service can't help with Discover products.

Through Friday, Capital One’s COF stock had returned 10.9% for 2025, while Discover shares had returned 16% as investors became more confident the deal would be completed. The KBW Bank Index had returned 2.8% so far this year. Those figures include reinvested dividends.
