SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — A section of the Salton Sea was hit by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred at 10:26 a.m. in a southern part of the lake, about 8.6 miles southeast of Bombay Beach. The location is about 170 miles east of San Diego.

The US Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake did not occur. "The posting was a result of an errant message sent during system testing," Paul Laustsen, public affairs for USGS, told News Channel 3.
