The Gators left no doubt as they earned their first SEC regular season title since 2014
Florida basketball defeated Arkansas to clinch the SEC regular season championship. Here's what happened in Florida's win over Arkansas.
Alabama's win over Tennessee kept Florida from winning the outright title, but the Gators clinched a share of its first SEC regular season title since 2014.
Arkansas came into the game leading the SEC in shooting percentage at 51.6 and shooting 35.2 from 3. Against the Gators, those numbers shrank to 40% and 31%, respectively, with Acuff, the league’s scoring leader at 22.2 points per game, finishing with 17 points on just six of 19 from the floor, six assists and three turnovers.
After opening the season 5-4 and briefly dropping out of the top 25, Florida basketball ultimately finished right where it expected to be. The early struggles proved temporary as the Gators surged back to claim at least a share of the SEC regular-season championship — just where the preseason polls had predicted and right where expectations had placed them.
With the loss, the Razorbacks are three games behind Florida in first place with two games to play before the postseason begins. They are no longer in contention for a regular-season title. Arkansas last won the SEC regular-season championship in 1993-94, the same season in which it won the national championship under former coach Nolan Richardson.
No. 7 Florida picked up its ninth straight win with a 111-77 rout of No. 20 Arkansas to secure the Gators’ eighth SEC regular-season title.
The UF bullpen tossed 6 2/3 frames of one-run ball and Ethan Surowiec put the game away with a three-run shot in the ninth.
