California lawmakers have released a draft map that could reshape congressional district lines across the state. If approved by voters in a special election this November, the new boundaries would take effect before the 2026 midterm elections.

As Texas hurtles toward a flashpoint on a GOP effort to redraw congressional districts, California Democrats are answering with a plan of their own.

“Our proposed map was created using traditional redistricting criteria, consistent with guidelines laid out by the California’s Citizen Redistricting Commission,” according to a cover letter from Julie Merz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee included with the map.

Democrats have struggled to find effective ways to oppose President Donald Trump, and even some Democratic voters describe the party as weak. But Trump’s push for states to redraw political maps and create more GOP-friendly House seats in time for the 2026 election has raised the stakes.

A spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said their office is aiming to release possible redrawn maps on Friday.
